In 1947, the United States re-established three branches: Army, Navy, and Air Force. The former Army Air Forces (USAAF) and Air Combat Command were part of the United States Air Force (USAF) and were under the Department of the Air Force. When the USAF was established, a new batch of "air blue" combat uniforms were born, such as N-3A, N-2A, L-2A, B-I5C, etc. This series of colors was used for a short time, but it became a classic. The most famous one is definitely Marilyn Monroe’s B-I5C upper body. The N-3A inherited the design of the N-3 and changed its color to blue, making it a classic product of that time period.
N-3A is rarer and more precious than N-3B. Only in the early 1950s, the military specification number was 6279. The production volume is relatively rare compared to the later N-3B. The design remains the same as the N-3, but the "Aero Blue" color is used. The hat also has a thick wool lining, and the lining is filled with wool. This solid stacking method was a feature of the flight suits of that era.
N-3A is mistaken by many people as the blue version of N-3B, but it is not. N-3B is evolved from N-3A. The intuitive differences are: the placket flap N-3A is longer, the waist drawstring N-3A is exposed, and the wool threaded cuffs N-3A are exposed. N-3A is made of waterproof nylon for the outer layer and heavy wool filling for the interlayer. It can protect the crew from extremely severe cold weather. At that time, it was mainly issued to troop transport, helicopter and strategic bomber air crews.
Historically, the zippers used in early N-2A were usually made of CROWN and CONMAR alloys with a boiled black outer layer, which would have an old look as it was used more often.
There is a small pocket on the left hip of the N-3A, which can be used to insert pens and some parts. This design is common on many flight jackets of the same period.
The filling of N-3A is made of wool with wool transplantation process, so the original label will say wool/cotton blend. In fact, it refers to the ratio of wool to bottom mesh. The wool is pure wool. This re-engraving also uses wool transplantation technology, and double-sided wool has a very good cold-proof effect.
