The 2nd Armored Division of the US Army is an armored division-level unit of the US Army, established in 1940. The 2nd Armored Division was formed in 1940 to enhance the mechanized and armored capabilities of the U.S. Army. This was a few years before the outbreak of World War II, and the U.S. military was facing an urgent need for modernization and equipment. The division was formed in response to possible war threats and expeditionary operations. The 2nd Armored Division was nicknamed "Hell on Wheels."
